The Rare Books from Saint Petersburg publishing house prepared its edition of Tvardovsky’s poem Vasily Tyorkin for 9 May 2020, as part of the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
Participants in the work on this publication:
Author of the project – Piotr Suspitsyn
Author of the illustrations, drawings and design of the book – Yan Lelchuk
Printing of the etchings – Vasily Kleimyonov
Typing of the text on a mechanical typewriter – Alexander Trofimov
Binding work – Andrei Degtev, Andrei Kulikov
The work consists of 26 chapters, an introduction and three digressions by the author. Each chapter tells about one episode in the front-line life of the central character, Vasily Tyorkin.
The text of the book was typed on an old mechanical typewriter (Rheinmetall, Germany, 1941). Stylistically it accords with the monochrome illustrations and unusual binding – with the overall concept of the edition, helping readers to immerse themselves deeper still in the atmosphere of the war years.
Each copy of this edition of Vasily Tyorkin is unique, differing in the quantity of illustrations accompanying the text and also the technique used to produce them. The copy shown in the photographic gallery contains 13 etchings produced from Yan Lelchuk’s designs and five inset pencil drawings. Previous copies were produced in which all the illustrations for the chapters took the form of pencil drawings.
Work on the illustrative material for the print-run is currently still continuing. The publishing house plans to have all the chapters of the poem accompanied by illustrations.
The insert from the pouch, which has been made part of the binding of the book, contains an opisometer (a device for measuring the length of curved lines on maps, plans and technical drawings), a pair of dividers, coloured graphite pencils, an eraser and a penknife.
The author’s initials and surname are embossed on the flap of the field pouch, the title of the poem on the spine of the book. The case and the endpapers are made of pieces of canvas taken from a soldier’s cape-tent. A mechanical wristwatch has been placed inside the case.
All copies within the print-run display clearly noticeable differences as the items used in finishing the books are authentic pieces of wartime equipment produced by various manufacturers in the period from the late 1930s to the mid-1940s.
